Why do I need a Criminal Records Check (CRC)?

As part of the safeguarding children strategy, The FA requires those working in eligible roles with children and young people to pass a criminal records check. Eligibility is governed by legislation and government guidance.

In brief this means, anyone aged 16 years or over who undertakes any unsupervised roles with children and young people under the age of 18. These activities include managing, training, coaching and supervising as well as giving advice or guidance on well-being, caring for children or driving a vehicle solely for children on behalf of a club or organisation. In youth football all coaches and managers must hold a current, FA accepted check. This is part of the affiliation criteria for youth football and forms part of our annual health check. It is important that all coaches have valid check for the entire season.

As a coach or manager, if you don’t have an in date accepted FA CRC check in place, we will not be able to use you in your vital and valued role in youth football – and no-one wants that.

What happens next?

Document Verification

Once you have completed your application you will need to contact the club's welfare officer so that the documentation identified in your application can be used to confirm your identity, date of birth and home address.

Payment

Once the club's welfare officer has confirmed verification of your documents with Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS), you will need to log in to the DBS and pay the fee for the CRC.

Confirmation

You will receive confirmation of your CRC from the DBS. This may take a few weeks to come through. The disclosure service may ask you some further questions or require you to supply additional documentation. Please make sure that you comply to their request as soon as possible, otherwise your CRC will be delayed and you will not be permitted to have any contact with your team.

How long does it last?

Your CRC will need to be renewed every 3 years.

I already have a CRC for something else, can I use this?

Yes if it is an FA CRC. If it is not an FA CRC you may still be able to port it (please check with the Club Welfare Officer), however there is a £10 fee involved and it will be quicker to apply for an FA CRC.

Will the Club pay the fee for applying for a FA CRC?

Yes, we will reimburse you the £10 cost of applying once we have been notified that your CRC has been completed. Please apply for your refund here.
