Leighton Town U10 girls won their first piece of silverware when they triumphed at the Chiltern Junior 7’s End of Season Tournament.
After a full season of playing 50 minute matches the girls struggled at first to get to grips with the short format games, but after letting in a soft early goal in the first game of the tournament the Town defence was not breached again and they remained unbeaten on the day.
Three draws in the group stage got Town into the semi-final against Biggleswade. Another draw, and a penalty shoot-out looked inevitable but Georgia Pennington added to her collection of wonder goals with a last minute smash into the net to send Town through 1-0 and into the final against St Martins.
The final was an end to end affair with chances being created by both sides. Alicia Franklin had to make some good saves in goal and in front of her Charlotte Blythe was outstanding in keeping the St Martins attack at bay. The winning goal came in the first half and was a great left footed strike into the top corner of the net by Adeya Edwards following a long throw in by Georgia Pennington.
As they had done in all of the games leading up to the final, Katy Pearce, Georgia Pennington, Sian Kennett and Adeya Edwards were all over the field closing down the opposition and creating chances. In a tense second half one of those chances fell to Chanice Ellis, who almost eased the supporters and Managers agony by adding a second goal, but was thwarted by a last ditch tackle from the St Martins defender.
A 1-0 victory in the final was well deserved and the 7 girls collected their first medals and hopefully first trophy of many in front of the Town supporters. Congratulations goes to the girls and their Manager Chris Blythe who has succeeded in winning Leighton Town’s first honours for the girls section in his first season with the Club.
