A splendid display by Town, although not fully reflected in the score, saw them crowned as deserved league champions as they beat Toddington Rovers 2-1.
Straight away Leighton's midfield machine purred into action. Jordan Potter consistently menaced, Alfie Ruston was tenacious, Luke Binding ran his heart out and Tom Coleman's combination of resolve and high skill shone forth. Although Toddington fore mostly defended, the Reds created a hat full of chances, but somehow reached the interval scoreless.
A great Matt Fisher save early in the second half prevented the travesty of Town going behind. This galvanised Leighton. Lee Adams' storming challenge and gallop forward set up Jake Robertson for a run and cross that enabled Jack Sewell to score off the post. Rovers now pushed forward, but the strength and authority of Dominic Cooper, Luke Evans, Charlie Green and Adams conquered all. Indeed, Green found time for a trademark drive up field, and this, coupled with a shrewd ball from impressive substitute Liam Edwards, enabled the gleeful Sewell to fire home the second. Toddington drove in a long-range goal to fray Leightonian nerves, but Lewis Henley's runs, plus blanket determination, successfully held the fort. So, top flight football next year, won by committed boys and dedicated coaching staff.
